The 1st MATRYCS Workshop was held on Tuesday the 22nd of June 2021, organised by MATRYCS and moderated by ICLEI. The scope of the 1st MATRYCS Stakeholder Workshop was to introduce approaches of elevating the building energy management with the use of big data. Building sector is one of the most energy consuming sector accounting a significant percentage of total global energy-related CO2 emissions. Competitive solutions are required to revolutionise energy efficiency and management in buildings. Taking the advantage of  the constantly increasing momentum of big data and their related technologies MATRYCS focuses on improving the energy efficiency along the building sector.

Through this interactive session, participants were motivated to be part in a real time poll which enabled to understand the pulse of the audience and the big data initiatives that were brought to the table.

Following, Pasquale Andriani (ENG) introduced the MATRYCS project and its vision. Dario Pellegrino (ENG) followed with a technical analysis of the big data use in the building sector while Gema Hernández Moral (CARTIF) presented an overview of data-driven real-life demonstrations that are under development within the MATRYCS project. Finally, the workshop concluded with a deep dive into 2 MATRYCS Large Scale Pilots focusing on big data impact in district and regional level by Jaime Gómez Tribiño (VEOLIA) and Alfredo Cadórniga Pedrosa (EREN) respectively.

Τhe last part of the workshop was an introduction to the Big Data Alliance by Roman Mendle (ICLEI) who highlighted that BDA will go far beyond MATRYCS. The BDA as a European platform aims at identifying, connecting, analysing, visualising and operationalising open and available data sets in Europe.
